Jeep Cherokee 1984-2001

Jeep introduced the second generation of the Cherokee between 1984 and 1998, while this generation remained in production in Egypt between 1992 and 2001. The Jeep Cherokee is an iconic vehicle for off-road enthusiasts. It was manufactured in several countries, including the United States, China, Venezuela, and Argentina. It ushered in a new era and category of multi-purpose four-wheel drive vehicles. It is popular in Egypt among construction workers, contractors, and business owners, but it is also suitable for travel, families, and daily driving.

The new Cherokee was more comfortable than the first generation due to its different chassis and more comfortable body construction, making it stand out on the road. It accommodated five passengers, had a powerful engine, and was a revolution at the time of its introduction. It was also known for its strength on the road and its ability to handle rough terrain smoothly.

The car features a powerful engine that generates a distinctive torque that helps the car perform well on hills, ascents, and off-road terrain. The car's engine varies depending on the model in this generation, the most important of which are the 2500 cc, 4-cylinder, manual, 130 hp, or the 4000 cc, 6-cylinder, automatic, 190 hp. However, many who have tested the car or have owned it confirm that the 4-cylinder engine is weak for a car that needs a more powerful engine. Therefore, the 6-cylinder engine is better for it, handling, and its heavier weight.

The engine's drawbacks include its loud noise when the car is in motion and its high fuel consumption, which many complain about, while other car owners find it to be normal in terms of fuel consumption and not excessive consumption. Also, used models may have recurring defects related to fuel leakage, and the engine and suspension should be thoroughly checked. Some complain about the engine overheating quickly, although these are few and not common complaints among car owners, who confirm that some equipment can be installed to eliminate this problem. The car's engine also has numerous sensors that, if they malfunction, require replacement. Even the car's transmission has three sensors in the 6-cylinder automatic version. The car's drawback is that the fuel pump is electric, which causes the car to stop completely if any part malfunctions, unlike mechanical pumps. Because the car has numerous electrical components, if any part malfunctions, it stops completely, unlike the mechanical components.

Although the car's exterior is a good size, the five-passenger cabin feels a bit cramped, particularly in the rear seat. The door opening is also narrow for entry, and the cabin insulation is poor.

It's also a high-riding car, making it difficult for some people, such as adults and children, to climb inside. The interior is also simple and lacks the distinction or luxurious touches some might expect.

Spare Parts

Spare parts are also widely available in many areas, but the availability of spare parts for the 6-cylinder version is higher than for the 4-cylinder version. Spare parts are also somewhat expensive, with the 4-cylinder version being more expensive than the 6-cylinder version. However, the car's spare parts are durable and last for a long time.

It can be said that maintenance and spare parts costs are not insignificant, but that is normal for this class of car, and certainly not for other lower-class cars. It also requires someone who understands how to handle it well, which is no longer a problem with the proliferation of the car and those who understand how to handle it.

Despite the widespread availability of spare parts, some parts pose a problem, such as the suspension, which requires replacing many components at a high price. However, the rest of the spare parts are available and consumable, and there are many types, especially imported ones, the longest-lasting and best of which are the original Mopar ones.

The car's high ground clearance, coupled with its off-road capabilities, allows it to handle bumps on Egyptian roads smoothly and easily, making it also suitable for unpaved roads riddled with potholes in many areas of Egypt.

The Cherokee's chassis is relatively stiff and inflexible, making it extremely difficult to handle. Buyers should be aware of this information regarding the suspension to avoid experiencing discomfort during driving and its impact on their backs. However, this is normal for a car designed for off-road use. Those who want a powerful car should overlook the dry suspension. The chassis is built on boxes, which is weaker than the double-wishbone chassis used for heavy-duty vehicles. The front suspension is weak and has coil springs.

The car may also suffer from instability at high speeds, especially in turns. This is due to the car's height, which is not primarily intended for running and accelerating at high speeds.

The car is popular and represents a prestige vehicle, allowing its driver to move easily and not fear anyone on the road. Therefore, it is easy to sell, as it has a powerful engine, a strong body, a good size, a comfortable fit, and a reasonable price, making it easy to sell.

However, there are some concerns about the car, which has led to a decline in demand recently. These concerns relate to fuel consumption, especially after the price of gasoline increased, as well as the price of taxes and fees imposed on the car due to the large engine size. There are also problems with the air conditioning and its frequent breakdowns, in addition to the impracticality of the rear trunk and its weak floor, which is a recurring complaint from some car owners. Owners also report defects related to the steering wheel housing being welded to the chassis, which leads to cracks in this part and shaking in the steering wheel.
