Ford Ka 2014-2016

The Ford Ka is a small, three-door hatchback produced by Ford from 1996 to 2016. It is a city car and was transformed from 2014 to 2021 into the Ka Plus in the compact car category. The second generation of the car appeared in 2008, which is the one we discuss in the following review. It was known in Egypt from 2014 to 2016 and was manufactured by Fiat in Poland. The third generation of the car was introduced in 2016. The second generation came as a three-door hatchback.

 

Manufacturing of the car began in 2008 at the Fiat factory in Poland, alongside the Fiat 500 and Panda. It is based on the Fiat 500 platform to reduce costs. The 2014 Ford Ka was introduced in Egypt as follows:

Titanium 99,900 EGP

Titanium Plus 108,900 EGP

 

The price subsequently increased in 2015 to the following prices:

Titanium 104,900 EGP

Titanium Plus 113,900 EGP.

The car was offered for sale in 2016 at a price of 88,900 EGP, making it the cheapest Ford car in Egypt.

Motor

The car is available with a 1.2-liter engine with 68 hp and 102 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 12 seconds, with an average fuel consumption of 5.1 liters per 100 km. It is available only with a 5-speed manual transmission, producing 119 g/km of emissions. The engine is sourced from Fiat and is related to the Fiat 500 and Fiat Panda.

Owners in Egypt confirm that the engine is good for the size of the car, making it lively, quick, and responsive. However, it only produces 68 hp, so it struggles to maintain speed on the highway. It is more suitable for city driving and less efficient on highways outside the city.

Insurance, car taxes, and fuel costs should be low for this type of car, and fortunately, this is the case with the Ford Ka. It achieves a fuel consumption of 5.1 liters per 100 km, making it an economical car. The car's drawback is the small engine compartment, which makes maintenance difficult for technicians.

The car is 3620 mm long, 1658 mm wide, and 1505 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2300 mm, and a curb weight of 870 kg.

The interior is well-designed, but it doesn't have the same distinctive design as the similarly equipped Fiat 500, which means you'll notice more cheap plastics than you might in the Fiat 500. It also doesn't come with as much standard equipment as the Hyundai i10, which can make the Ka feel a little too basic.

You wouldn't choose the Ka for larger rear passengers, as space in the back is tight. However, space up front is good, and the trunk is large for a small car, hampered only by the large loading lip and the lack of a folding seat in the base versions.

In the cabin, high levels of wind noise are present from the top of the side windows and also from the large wing mirrors. The high seating position gives the driver good outward visibility. The large mirrors also make it easier to judge the sides of the car and fit it in the tightest spaces, and the car's air conditioning is good.

Spare Parts

Ford Ka is known for its low maintenance and repair costs. Spare parts are readily available, despite their limited availability in certain areas. There are well-known dealers who specialize in providing Ford spare parts. These are reliable, but not as widely available as Korean and Japanese cars, and their prices are moderate to low.

The car shares spare parts with the Ford Fiesta, as well as with the Fiat 500, Fiat Panda, Fiat Siena, and Punto. This includes the drum, disc, brake pads, shock absorbers, control arms, air filters, and air conditioning.

 

Suspension

The car features an improved shock absorber system from the Fiat 500, drawing on Ford's expertise in suspension and steering to make it more agile, precise, and quieter in turns. A rear anti-roll bar provides 30% more spring softness and contributes to adjusting shock absorption, improving ride comfort and performance even on unpaved roads. Some of the updates are derived from the famous Fiat 500 Abarth and Fiat 500C, with the car receiving electric power steering, making the steering lighter and more energy-efficient than the first generation. The car is stable on the road and the ride is good.

Resale

The Ford Ka lacks resale value compared to more capable rivals. It's a good used car if you get it cheap enough, but it's a heavyweight in the resale market and sells at a loss. Despite being a reliable car with a distinctive design, a reasonable price for its class, a decent engine, and smooth towing, the car faces stiff competition in this segment from more mainstream cars such as the Hyundai i10, Toyota Yaris, and Kia Picanto.
