The Daihatsu Materia is considered one of the most unusual cars to enter the Egyptian market. It came with a distinctive design and a semi-square shape. Despite its distinctive appearance, it was loved by some and disliked by others. However, it was ultimately one of the Daihatsu cars that left its mark on the local market.
The Daihatsu Materia combines the advantages of a youthful hatchback and a family car, making it a distinct choice for many when it was first introduced to the market. It is considered one of the cars with clear Japanese design influences, as similar cars are widespread in Japan.
The car was introduced to the Egyptian market from 2007 to 2009. The Materia belongs to the compact MPV category and utilizes the Sirion's wheelbase. In terms of exterior lines, the Materia is distinguished by its square shape and perpendicular side glass panels, as well as its elevated driving position compared to competing models. The car was offered in three categories as follows: 90,000 EGP for the half-option manual 100,900 EGP for the full manual 107,900 EGP for the full automatic The first category, priced at 90,000 EGP, was later cancelled, leaving only two categories available, with the price increased as follows: 102,500 EGP for the full manual 109,500 EGP for the full automatic
The car was introduced in Egypt with a 1500cc, 4-cylinder, 16-valve DVVT-DOHC electronically injected engine, producing 105 hp at 6,000 rpm and 132 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. It's a 16-valve, fully Japanese-made engine, mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. It also offers a 40-liter fuel tank. Fuel consumption is 7.2 liters per 100 km for the manual and 7.3 liters per 100 km for the automatic.
A number of car owners confirmed that the car's top speed ranges from 150 to 170 km/h. The car also provides good traction and good engine buildup at startup. The car also features good power steering that responds precisely to steering even at high speeds. It's EPS, not mechanical.
There are some flaws with the car, including the transmission, especially the manual, which sometimes feels rough when the clutch is fully depressed. On the other hand, there are no flaws with the engine or the car's overall performance, and there are no complaints about its performance.
The car is 3.8 meters long, 1.690 meters wide, and 1.635 meters high, with a wheelbase of 2,540 mm.
The cabin accommodates five passengers, offering high levels of spaciousness, as well as the flexibility of the large seats. The rear seat accommodates three passengers and can be moved forward and backward to provide more room for passengers or to increase the trunk's storage space, as the rear trunk space isn't the largest in its class. The driver's seat is also adjustable fore and aft, as well as up and down.
The car boasts an elegant interior, with the instrument panel positioned in the center of the dashboard, while the instrument cluster design isn't the best. The air conditioning vents are also elegantly designed.
The car boasts an interior space that its exterior appearance belies. This is one of the most spacious cars in its class, and it comes with plenty of storage spaces throughout, enhancing its practicality, along with more than one cup holder.
It boasts ample equipment, including powerful air conditioning that reaches the rear passengers, airbags, and an audio system that includes a CD player and a premium MP3 player.
As for cabin insulation, it's good, isolating the car from external sounds as well as the sounds of tires rubbing against the ground, while also isolating the engine noise.
The car's drawback is the high price of its spare parts. In 2009, the prices were as follows:
Fuel filter: 1,407 Egyptian pounds
Front brake pads: 420 Egyptian pounds
Air filter: 177 Egyptian pounds
Pump: 2,000 Egyptian pounds
The car has also disappeared from Egypt for a long time, and the Daihatsu dealership stopped supplying any cars in Egypt a long time ago. However, it decided to continue supplying spare parts for 20 years, after which it will stop supplying them in Egypt. This means that the dealership will provide the car's spare parts until 2027. After that, it will rely primarily on imported spare parts from dealers.
Spare parts are also not widely available outside the dealership and from dealers in Egypt.
The car is stable on the road, balanced, and doesn't sway to the right or left. At the same time, the suspension is a little rough and needs to be tightened regularly. The roughness is more in the rear of the car than the front. This doesn't mean it's rough in the back, but it's uncomfortable when you feel the road.
The car's ground clearance is about 15 cm, which is an average distance, making it capable of handling bumps and potholes well. The wheelbase is also characterized by the front wheels being close to the rear, making it easier to handle bumps and avoiding them rubbing against the road.
The car's position in the used market is difficult, as it has a moderate presence due to its weak sales as a new car. This car has not achieved significant sales in the Egyptian car market due to its unusual design, which has discouraged many buyers, despite the fact that there have been no complaints about its performance or defects. Although it is considered a lower-priced alternative to the Hyundai Matrix, it has not achieved the same popularity as the Matrix due to the strength of the Hyundai brand and its agent, while the Daihatsu brand is not as strong in the Egyptian market.
The Matrix lacks several criteria for resale, including the high price of spare parts, the lack of widespread availability of spare parts, and the car's high fuel consumption.
The car has some safety features appropriate for its class, but without the many safety features that were common at the time of the car's introduction, including:
ABS brakes
EBD brakes
Front fog lights
2 airbags
Central lock.
