Skoda Rapid Spaceback 2014-2017

The Skoda Rapid Spaceback was officially launched in Egypt in 2014, with Artoc Auto as its agent at the time. It was offered in Egypt in three different trim levels until 2017: ACTIVE, priced at EGP 155,000. AMBITION, priced at EGP 170,000. ELEGANCE, priced at EGP 190,000. The Rapid Spaceback is the hatchback version of the Rapid, which was launched in 2013. At the time, the car featured a new engine, automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. Czech company Skoda announced that it manufactured the 5-door Skoda Rapid Spaceback hatchback at its main factory in Mlada Boleslav.

The Rapid Spaceback achieved relatively good sales when it first appeared in Egypt, but then continued to gradually decline, recording sales of 93 cars in the first half of 2014, then 108 cars in the first seven months of 2015, and then only eight cars in the first seven months of 2016.

The Rapid Spaceback expresses its philosophy with its streamlined, youthful shape. The car is positioned between the Fabia and Octavia, and is shorter in length than the sedan version.

The Škoda Rapid Spaceback is powered by a 1.6-liter MPI four-cylinder engine that produces 105 hp at 5,600 rpm and 153 Nm of torque at 3,800 rpm. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic shifting. Top speed is 190 km/h (118 mph) and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is 11.8 seconds. Fuel consumption is 8.9 liters per 100 km (120 mph) in the city, 4.9 liters (120 mph) outside the city, and an average of 6.4 liters per 100 km (120 mph). It also has front-wheel drive.

The car's net weight is 1,190 kg, with a payload of 535 kg, a gross weight of 1,650 kg, and a fuel tank capacity of 55 liters.

The car boasts good engine traction and acceleration without a tingling or slow shifting sensation. However, ultimately, the engine and transmission are considered traditional, old-school technologies.

The car is 4303 mm long, has a wheelbase of 2602 mm, is 1706 mm wide without mirrors, and increases to 1940 mm with mirrors. It has a height of 1459 mm.

The car seats five and has five doors. There's a size difference between it and the Rapid, with the Rapid Spaceback being 20 cm shorter, as it's a hatchback. Although the wheelbase is the same, the length difference is evident in the smaller trunk.

The car's cabin is well insulated, with sufficient interior space compared to its competitors, and it can accommodate three people in the rear bench. It also comes with good air conditioning.

The cabin's drawbacks include the large amount of plastic materials and poor upholstery, along with a narrow trunk space of 413 liters. However, this is compensated by the ability to increase the capacity to 1,400 liters by folding the rear seats.

All parts of the Skoda Rapid Spaceback are Volkswagen-manufactured, even the engine and upholstery, while Skoda is responsible for the assembly. Spare parts availability is moderate and is decreasing over time with the absence of Rapid models from the market, but those available are original and long-lasting. There are spare parts that can be shared between the Rapid Spaceback and other Skoda models, including the engine, suspension, exterior sheet metal, and glass, except for the exterior parts that distinguish the car’s appearance, including the headlights and taillights.

The front axle is a MacPherson strut with torsion beam and a multi-link rear axle with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The ground clearance is 136 mm. Despite being a hatchback, the car feels stable on the road, especially at high speeds and on curves. The suspension is soft, with a slightly firm feel in some areas.

The Skoda Rapid Spaceback's resale value is weak in Egypt due to the car's lack of significant sales and lower resale value than the Rapid models, which haven't achieved the same success as other Skoda models, such as the Octavia. The 2015 Rapid Spaceback is most popular, and its prices maintain a high resale value. However, its resale value is slow and it is heavy in the market, despite being a good car. Overall, the car is excellent for its price range, but its difficulty selling is a drawback.
