Seat Ateca 2017-2020

The SEAT Ateca was first introduced in Egypt in April 2017 through its agent, Kayan, and is still available in the local market at the time of writing this review and evaluation of the car. It is a compact SUV and the first SUV produced by SEAT. It was launched in the Egyptian market at a ceremony held in El Gouna, attended by a delegation from the international SEAT company.

During its first appearance in Egypt, the car was available in two trim levels:

Style, priced at EGP 469,900.

Style Plus, priced at EGP 539,900.

A third trim level, Excellence, was also introduced, but was not priced at the first appearance. Its price was subsequently set at EGP 585,000.

The FR version of the car also appeared at the end of 2018 as a 2019 model, priced at EGP 639,000.

A version was also introduced FR Beats in 2019 with a dedicated audio system and a price tag of 509,000 Egyptian pounds.

Egypt was one of the first African countries to officially launch the car, about two months before Morocco and Tunisia. The car was offered with all safety features and featured high-quality specifications, in addition to its stunning design, which underwent several stages during SEAT's four years of work. SEAT's initial production target was 80,000 units, with demand exceeding 150,000.

The name Ateca is of Arabic origin, meaning ancient and authentic. It is also a Spanish city, as SEAT is known for naming its cars after cities in Spain. The car is available with a 100,000 km or five-year warranty, whichever comes first. The car is available in 11 colors.

The car features a simple design with calm lines and fierce headlights that give it a sporty, aggressive character and an aggressive front end. The headlights are fully LED-powered. The design lines on the hood are simple yet maintain a sporty look. The front grille appears black, providing good ventilation for the engine. It features the SEAT logo and a nickel frame around the upper grille, with a matte silver finish below the front bumper. Protective plastic wraps around the bottom of the car to protect it from friction and shocks. It features a calm side design with electrically adjustable and folding mirrors equipped with LED signals and welcome lights that appear at night when the car is unlocked, along with the Ateca logo. The rear features SEAT's signature taillights, rear sensors, and a rear camera to facilitate reversing. The tailgate features the word Ateca in chrome.

The SEAT Ateca is equipped with a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine producing 150 hp at 5,000 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1,500 rpm. It's mated to a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. Manual shifting is available via the steering wheel, and the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds. However, published acceleration tests showed the car accelerate in nearly 10 seconds with the air conditioning on and a full load. Fuel consumption on both internal and external roads is 5.5 to 6 liters per 100 km. One of the Ateca's most important features is its good fuel consumption. The car's four-cylinder engine can operate on only two cylinders between 40 and 120 km/h, providing maximum fuel economy. With the intelligent engine management and shutdown feature, which also saves fuel when the car is stopped for short periods.

The engine noise is noticeable during normal driving, but ultimately, it is a highly responsive, active engine that doesn't require prolonged pressure on the accelerator pedal to increase engine revs. The car's response is excellent, with no lag.

The car's transmission is a seven-speed DSG, offering maximum fuel economy and saving time when shifting gears. To keep up with the fierce competition in this category, the 2020 model came with a standard 8-speed automatic transmission instead of the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic with the same engine. This increased the transmission's reliability, but acceleration dropped to 9 seconds, and the top speed was 197 km/h.

The DSG transmission had problems initially, but it was modified and improved over time, and the Ateca appeared in the Egyptian market with the same transmission, which did not cause any problems. The change to an 8-speed automatic was due to the parent company's policy. Volkswagen has opted for a DSG transmission for high-demand models and an 8-speed automatic for less-demanding models. The new transmission offers good performance and smooth shifting, providing great responsiveness at both high and low speeds, and is also fuel-efficient.

Ultimately, according to owners, the engine's performance is excellent and provides a great driving experience, setting it apart from many of its competitors. It's a good, dynamic engine that delivers strong performance with a strong engine response.

The SEAT Ateca is 4363 mm long, 1841 mm wide, 1601 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 2638 mm. Its curb weight is 1364 kg, and its gross weight is 1910 kg. The trunk space is 510 liters, and with the rear seats folded, it expands to 1604 liters. Its interior design also features many of the luxurious touches typical of luxury cars, setting it apart from its competitors. Upon entering the car, the first thing you'll notice is that the interior space is very good, and the rear seating is comfortable. Rear air conditioning vents provide good cooling for rear passengers, along with a cup holder in the middle of the rear seat. When riding in the rear seats, you'll find that the transmission tunnel can be a bit large, which affects the comfort of rear passengers. In general, the SEAT Ateca's seating space is spacious and comfortable, and the front windscreen provides good visibility. However, car owners find the driver's seat relatively uncomfortable.

Storage spaces in the car are ample, and the trunk capacity reaches 510 cubic liters, which can be increased by folding the rear seats. The tailgate is fully electric and can be opened either via the car's remote control, a button on the tailgate outside the car, or a button on the dashboard inside the car. The rear trunk door opening offers ample access for loading and unloading large items without the risk of colliding with the car. The height of this door opening can be adjusted to suit the driver's preference, while the only limited storage space is in the driver's armrest.

The interior materials are considered to be of good quality. High-quality materials are present throughout the Ateca's cabin, along with some chrome accents that add a touch of elegance. There are also some plastic parts.

The car features a large panoramic sunroof with tinting, attractive interior lighting, and adjustable color schemes. When the car is opened, the welcome lights appear with the Ateca logo and wordmark. The infotainment system is smooth and simple, with a high-quality screen and a rear camera with a good, clear image and quick touch response. There are large glass areas and thin pillars that do not create many blind spots. Overall, the car offers a sporty, youthful driving experience, offering driving pleasure from a low driver's seat.

The car's isolation from road noise is good. At high speeds, the outside wind noise is not disturbing, and the engine noise is only a slight roar. Therefore, the Ateca's interior insulation is very good, blocking out most of the ambient noise from the wind and engine sounds of other cars.

The car also offers cabin comfort features, including buttons for performing many functions on the steering wheel and a screen between the gauges displaying information about the car, engine, and fuel. A large screen on the dashboard also provides more information about the car and the driving system. The central screen can be connected to smartphones via USB, with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The car also features powerful, high-performance Japanese air conditioning, and rear air conditioning vents provide cooling for the entire car.

Seat Ateca spare parts are more available at the dealership and from some dealers specializing in Seat, but they are not widely distributed everywhere. The Ateca's drawback is that its spare parts prices are high in the local market compared to some of its Japanese and Korean competitors, in addition to the high maintenance costs, unlike its competitors. Seat Ateca's periodic maintenance prices are good for regular maintenance, although they are high for maintenance at 60,000, 90, and 120,000 km, and there are not many maintenance centers outside the dealership.

Despite being an SUV, the SEAT Ateca boasts excellent highway stability and maneuverability. The car's suspension provides excellent stability, and the suspension system isolates passengers and driver from uneven road vibrations.

However, the SEAT Ateca's suspension system allows for a noticeable sense of road bumps. However, the car's resale market is better than the SEAT Tarraco's, and it does have a niche market, albeit limited, with enthusiasts who know the car and prefer it despite its shortcomings in terms of resale value, spare parts costs, and maintenance. The most popular models on the resale market are the 2020 models, before the facelift. The car has been recalled as a 2018 model to check and replace the air conditioning pipe.
