Proton Persona 2007-2016

The Proton Persona is a compact sedan manufactured by Malaysian manufacturer Proton. The first generation was codenamed C90 and carried the Wira name. The Persona name was first used globally in 1993 in the UK market. The regular Persona was offered in a three-door compact version and a two-door coupe. The second generation, known as the CM, was introduced in 2007 and was the first model to carry the Persona name in Malaysia. Based on the Gen 2 platform, it replaced the Proton Wira saloon in Malaysia and overseas markets. The third generation was unveiled in 2016. Based on the Iriz platform, it replaced the previous Persona CM in Malaysia.

Motor

The car is powered by a 1.6-liter, 16-valve, DOHC, 4-cylinder engine with 110 hp at 6,500 rpm and 148 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. It also has a 50-liter fuel tank. With these specifications, the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in between 11.5 and 13.9 seconds, depending on the manual and automatic versions.

This engine provides good traction at high speeds and was manufactured under the supervision of the British company Lotus, which has introduced newer versions of the engine that improve torque at higher speeds. The car's aerodynamic exterior design reduces air resistance, saves fuel, and enhances performance. One of the car's drawbacks is the loud engine noise that quickly reaches the cabin, especially at high speeds.

The car's small fuel tank means it must fill up frequently.

The car is 4.477 meters long, 1.725 meters wide, and 1.438 meters high, with a wheelbase of 2.6 meters. It weighs between 1,200 and 1,225 kg for the manual and automatic, respectively. The cabin isn't particularly spacious or comfortable, but it's average, outperforming some Korean cars. However, there are general complaints about defects in the car's interior dashboard seal, some of the materials used in the cabin, and some noises coming from the dashboard, along with poor insulation that allows sounds to easily reach the cabin.

The car's interior design is considered good, with colored gauges, a dashboard shape, a distinctive door panel, and sporty seats that provide comfort for passengers, but interior storage space is limited.

Spare Parts

40%

Despite many complaints about the price of car spare parts, some owners confirm that the car is well-stocked, like some other models, and there is no significant shortage of spare parts. However, the car is known for its high spare parts prices and lack of availability everywhere. This is because Proton cars are not widely distributed, making it difficult to find alternative spare parts, whether Taiwanese or otherwise. The agency prices are very high, but there are dealers who import it, but their number is small.

The car owners confirmed that repairing the car is easy, and many technicians working in Korean and Japanese can fix it easily, and its faults are not frequent.

Suspension

70%

The car has a front MacPherson strut suspension and a multi-link rear suspension with a stabilizer bar. Like all Proton models, the car is characterized by stability and control of the car during turns and maneuvers. Its owners confirm that the car is stable even at high speeds. This is due to the car's chassis, which belongs to the British Lotus family of cars, which has a long history in car racing that requires high stability. The car's suspension also achieves a high degree of stability on the road, but its drawback is that the suspension is somewhat dry to achieve stability for the car. It is also equipped with 15-inch wheels to increase stability on the road.

Although there are many who love Proton cars, everyone complains about the dealership and poor service and maintenance, which makes the company's cars, especially the newer ones that are still under warranty, weak in the used market. The high prices of spare parts and manufacturing make many people prefer to avoid buying this car, in addition to emphasizing the many manufacturing defects that appear in all Proton cars in general, which make the car in need of constant dealing with the dealer and warranty.

Despite these ongoing defects, it can be said that the Persona is a car with good performance in terms of driving, speed, and good accessories.

Ventilated brake discs in the front and solid discs in the rear, a Proton feature, give the car powerful braking, especially given its weight. However, the pedal travel is long for an automatic car.
