The first generation of the Mazda 2 appeared in 1996 and continued until 2002, while the second generation appeared from 2002 until 2007, while the third generation also appeared from 2007 until 2014. The Mazda 2 was introduced in Egypt in its fourth generation in 2016 as 2017 models. It is one of the distinctive family sedans that some see as still closer to the hatchback. The car was introduced in its fourth generation in Egypt in 2016. The Mazda 2 was introduced in four versions with prices ranging between 163,990 – 176,990 EGP, as follows in 2016:

The first category is priced at 163,990 EGP

The second category is priced at 165,990 EGP for the red color

The third version is priced at 174,990 EGP

The fourth category is priced at 176,990 EGP for the red color

Prices rose shortly after the car's introduction, reaching 220,000 EGP for the first category with the dollar increase. The car has a distinctive exterior design inspired by the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6, but with a more compact design.

The car offers a sharp appearance, good running costs, and a fun drive. It boasts attractive looks, practicality, and engaging driving characteristics. It is a serious competitor in the small sedan segment, but not in Egypt. It's a small sports car that offers fun and fuel economy at the same time.

The Mazda 2 is powered by a 1500cc, 4-cylinder, 16-valve, non-turbocharged Skyactiv-G engine. With 108 hp at 6,000 rpm and 139 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, the car delivers an average fuel consumption of approximately 5.5 liters/100 km. It's mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with SkyActiv Drive technology, sending power to the front wheels. The car has a 44-liter fuel tank.

The car runs on 92-octane gasoline and offers a good balance between power and weight, providing adequate acceleration and sporty performance. It accelerates to 100 km/h in 12 seconds, which doesn't seem like great acceleration, but it's adequate for its role as a compact sedan. Its top speed is 185 km/h. While other brands strive for efficiency with small-displacement, turbocharged engines, Mazda sticks with larger, non-turbocharged engines that deliver good performance and fuel efficiency.

The car has distinctive dimensions, appropriate for a sedan, despite having been transformed from a hatchback into a sedan. This hasn't significantly impacted the interior's spaciousness, particularly in the front seats, where there's comfortable space. However, the rear seat is narrow and difficult to sit in. It's more suitable for young people or small, modern families due to the narrow rear seats.

The car is 4.32 meters long, 1.69 meters wide, and 1.47 meters high, with a wheelbase of 2.57 meters. It offers a 410-liter trunk, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats.

The car features luxurious materials in its interior design, outperforming Korean cars in this area, and is a strong competitor to the Toyota Yaris sedan. The car also comes with distinctive interior features, including a speedometer, a computer, and an interior console that provides control of the car's equipment through built-in buttons.

The car's shortcomings are its small seats, as the attempt to provide more leg and head comfort came at the expense of seat size. The car's trunk is also small, and it doesn't have rear air conditioning. However, the front air conditioning distributes air well, and the cabin insulation is quite good. In short, it's a fairly small car with room for five adults in relative comfort, with difficulty in the back, but luggage space is average.

It seems that car spare parts are not sufficiently available due to the car's discontinuation in Egypt. Even if they are available at the dealership, they are less available outside of Egypt. Also, Mazda spare parts prices are not normal, but rather relatively high, in line with the value and prices of the cars.

Suspension

The car provides good stability and grip on the road thanks to its short wheelbase and distinctive agile suspension system, which makes the car better at maneuvering at high speeds and on narrow roads. It comes with a McPherson strut front suspension, a Turin Beam rear suspension, and twin-tube front and rear shock absorbers. This suspension makes the car suitable for handling Egyptian roads with rough terrain. There have been no noticeable complaints about the car's suspension.

The car is currently no longer available in Egypt, as it was discontinued due to the car's poor sales in Egypt and the popularity of the Mazda 3, which surpassed it. This led some to believe that the Mazda 3 was better and easier to maintain and resell, and that its spare parts were more readily available than the Mazda 2. Furthermore, the Mazda 2's image, which was taken from its foundation as a hatchback, meant it required more marketing effort, which did not happen. The car was discontinued in Egypt, and consequently its resale price declined. It became difficult to resell it due to fears of a shortage of spare parts and the inability to resell it due to buyers' lack of interest in it compared to more popular models.
