The Kia Picanto is a small city hatchback manufactured worldwide since 2003. However, the generation discussed in the following review is the second generation, which was available from 2011 to 2019 in Egypt before the car was discontinued locally and never offered again due to its exorbitant price if imported into Egypt. The company's marketing director confirmed several years ago that the European Partnership Agreement had caused the Kia Picanto to lose its competitive edge after its price exceeded EGP 250,000 during its final stages of introduction, with expectations of a higher price for the new generation. Its final price in Egypt was EGP 285,000, with its last appearance in a single High Line trim. This was considered a significant figure, outperforming many sedans available at the time. Outside Egypt, the Kia Picanto is known as the Morning, Hong Kong, and Eurostar. The Kia Picanto is one of the most prominent vehicles in the small city car segment, thanks to its distinctive design, which distinguishes it from other vehicles in its class. It also features a bold, sophisticated design and enhanced comfort and safety standards typical of small cars, making it extremely practical. Designed by Peter Schreyer, the renowned German designer who spearheaded the major design shift in Kia cars since 2006, the Picanto features the so-called "tiger nose," a common front grille design for all Kia vehicles. It also boasts a sleek, aerodynamic design and improved aerodynamics. The Kia Picanto has consistently competed in the Egyptian market with models such as the Suzuki Alto, Chevrolet Spark, Hyundai i10, and Daihatsu Sirion. It accounted for 10% of sales in its segment before its discontinuation in Egypt. In 2017, for example, it sold 398 cars.

The second-generation Kia Picanto in Egypt is powered by a 1200cc or 1250cc engine. This engine utilizes modern technologies such as the multi-point injection (MPI) system and CVVT (variable valve timing) technology, which reduces fuel consumption while delivering maximum power and torque. The car generates 87 hp at 6,000 rpm and 121 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. With a manual transmission, this engine can propel the car to 100 km/h from a standstill in 11.4 seconds, and can propel the car, which weighs just under a ton, to a top speed of 171 km/h.

The Picanto achieves an economical fuel consumption of 5.4 liters per 100 km for the automatic transmission, and 4.7 liters per 100 km for the manual version.

The engine is highly efficient while maintaining low fuel consumption, low maintenance costs, and a smooth, quiet ride. The fuel tank capacity is 35 liters. The engine delivers performance beyond expectations despite its small size, due to the car's light weight. This is where the Picanto's strength lies: it's a compact car that's easy to maneuver and park on the streets of Cairo. It's available with an automatic transmission for traffic jams, and delivers highly satisfactory performance.

The car features a power steering wheel that gets heavier as the car's speed increases, along with the Eco mode. The car boasts good traction for its engine size, as expected from larger engines. The engine sound is not very noticeable.

The car is 3,595 mm long, 1,595 mm wide, and 1,490 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,385 mm. The second generation offers more spaciousness than its predecessor, with the overall length increasing by approximately 60 mm, while the wheelbase increased by 15 mm.

The improved interior provides front passenger seats with 36 mm more legroom and a 27% increase in luggage capacity. The new Picanto features a strong, balanced design that combines contemporary fashion with practicality, offering a sophisticated cabin. The car also has a 200-liter trunk, which is considered a very small space.

The interior materials are relatively economical and contain a lot of plastic, but they are not cheap and can withstand long periods of use. It also features a stylish dashboard, cup holders, and good interior lighting, along with a variety of interior mirrors, making it ideal for girls. The car's interior is spacious for its class, but it's narrow for family use, making it suitable for this class of car.

However, some may prefer other competitors in the same class due to the Picanto’s price being significantly higher than theirs. Therefore, the Alto and Spark may be cheaper alternatives to the Picanto, which has a higher mental image and financial value due to the equipment and safety features available in it compared to its competitors.
