Volkswagen Passat 2010-2017

The Volkswagen Passat is a large family sedan manufactured by the German company since 1973 and is currently in its eighth generation. In 2008, the company introduced the four-door Passat CC coupe. The new version was manufactured in Europe in 2014 using the MQB platform and was introduced as a 2015 model. It continues to this day. In Egypt, the seventh generation, which we are discussing here, was available until 2018, when the eighth generation was introduced as a 2019 model. The car was introduced as a 2016 model at a price of 315,000 Egyptian pounds. It was initially available in two trims: Basic and High Line, and later in one trim. The car featured a simple, elegant design with slim headlights, resembling a four-door coupe.

The new design for this generation offered more comfort and fuel economy with a stiffer, lighter body and new, highly efficient engines, while clearly maintaining the Passat DNA. Every aspect of the car, except for the roof, was changed compared to previous Passat models. The exterior design remained largely unchanged, despite the addition of cosmetic touches for modernization. The car competes with the Ford Fusion, Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Subaru Legacy.

The car features a 1400cc, or more precisely 1390cc, 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine that produces 122 hp at 5,000 rpm and 210 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm. It's mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission, sending power to the front wheels. These specifications help the car accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds and to 80 km/h in 6.9 seconds, with a top speed of 203 km/h. It also has a combined fuel consumption of 6.6 liters per 100 km.

The car also features a 70-liter fuel tank, and the engine is considered an economical engine that doesn't consume a lot of fuel.

DSG transmissions have a poor reputation in Egypt, even though the agent confirms that the problems have ended. This transmission, while some owners have confirmed that its problems were present in models before 2010, still poses a problem for those interested in purchasing a DSG transmission, especially given that many have reported its numerous malfunctions and its inability to handle Egyptian roads. Although it handles highways and roads outside Egypt well, it is unsuitable for Egyptian roads.

Many owners have confirmed that its main problem is its ability to handle 95-octane gasoline, while 92-octane gasoline can be used, but this affects the engine's power, performance, and lifespan.

There are no problems with the car's engine; it achieves good traction and acceleration, but the main problems are related to the DSG transmission.

The company has focused on raising the interior equipment levels to bridge the gap between it and more luxurious Audis. The seats have been improved, with heating and cooling features, and a new center console with additional electronic indicators and many other features is airtight and insulated. However, the dashboard design resembles the previous model. The seats are more bolstered on the sides and look better than the previous generation's.

The Passat also boasts generous cargo space, especially with the rear seats folded down. However, folding the seats doesn't provide a flat floor unless the headrests are removed. It comes with a large 565-liter trunk, and with the rear seats folded, the storage space increases to over 1,000 liters. There are also multiple storage spaces in the dashboard, a sunglass case at the top when the front cabin lights are on, and a computer that reminds you of maintenance dates and fuel consumption. Finally, the cabin is very comfortable and spacious, and the rear bench comfortably accommodates three passengers.

Spare parts for German cars are considered expensive, especially exterior accessories, which are available at dealerships and outside the dealership. However, owners of these high-priced cars can better handle original spare parts. The most common spare parts that require replacement are worn wheel bearings, door hinges, and rear wiper motors. Gearbox replacement problems are also numerous.

However, car spare parts are durable and last for a long time, so their prices are reasonable. They can also be imported and purchased from outside the dealership.

The car has a distinctive suspension similar to that used in the "Golf" cars, consisting of "McPherson" springs in the front, and an independent suspension in the rear, which provides stability on Egyptian roads, especially at high speeds and in the rain, but there are slight vibrations that are not noticeable at high speeds.

The car comes with a ground clearance of 145 mm, so the height from the ground is not large, but it enables the car to overcome wide bumps, but the narrow, high bumps cause the car to rub with the full load. The car's drawback is the lack of an underbody shield. The suspension is also soft, but it is not the best at high speeds.

The problem with the DSG transmission and its reputation is a reason why many people shy away from buying newer Volkswagens, including the Passat, which lowers the resale value of the car. Ultimately, these are important German cars and are among the best-selling Volkswagens in Egypt. However, many prefer models that do not feature the DSG transmission, especially pre-2010 models. Complaints have decreased regarding subsequent models, despite their not being outdated. These problems have put the car in a difficult position, especially since the dealership's image has remained negative for a long time due to maintenance and spare parts issues.

However, the car itself has no other problems, and therefore its owners are grateful for its quality, performance, and German excellence in materials, even though many of the luxuries are not available, making its price reasonable.
