The Scorpio first appeared as a concept in 1996, but actual production began in 2002, with the company investing $120 million to manufacture the car. The car later arrived in Egypt after undergoing some design modifications, winning numerous Indian and international awards in the SUV category during that period.
The car bears some design features of previous Jeep models, with a front grille reminiscent of Jeep models. The car was available in GLX and SX two-wheel drive and GLX four-wheel drive models. Each car featured a different bumper design, the same body color or gray, and different 16-inch alloy or steel wheels.
The car was manufactured in Egypt at the Bavarian Auto Group factory and was introduced in 2008 with a starting price of EGP 120,000. The car was available in 2011 in two versions, priced at EGP 143,000 and EGP 170,000. The company has not achieved significant sales in recent years in Egypt, with Mahindra selling 80 cars locally in 2013 and 33 cars in 2014 before discontinuing operations in Egypt. The car features a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine with 121 hp and 180 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. This Euro 2-compliant engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and two-wheel drive for all models, or four-wheel drive, with only one model offering an electric disc instead of the standard paddle-shift gearbox.
The car is also available with a 103 hp, 2.6-liter turbo diesel engine. This engine was not available at the start of the car's launch, but was later available with a 5-speed manual transmission.
The company also introduced the Mahindra Scorpio V Series with an automatic transmission and a 2.2-liter M-HAWK engine in Egypt in 2010. This turbo diesel engine produces 120 hp and 290 Nm of torque. This engine offers a comfortable, smooth ride and better fuel efficiency. The 6-speed automatic transmission provides the car with a smooth and synchronized acceleration. The transmission requires significant maintenance and never requires an oil change. The Mahindra Scorpio was also the first car in Egypt to feature a diesel engine with very low exhaust emissions, meeting EURO3 standards. The new Mahindra Scorpio V-Series comes in two different models: the VLX 2×4 and the VLX 4×4, with front-wheel drive or a non-full-time all-wheel drive system, a top speed of 280 km/h, and electronic fuel injection. Among the car's drawbacks is a violent shudder in the transmission in third gear, which resolves once the transmission shifts to fourth. However, fuel consumption is good, and there are no engine complaints other than the high noise of the turbo diesel engine. The car is 4.482 meters long, 1.775 meters wide, and 1.916 meters high. The two-wheel-drive vehicle weighs 1,940 kg. It has aluminum sills for entering the cabin. The car's dimensions aren't large, but they are fairly good, with a smaller width. Overall, it's a spacious and comfortable car, with seating for up to eight passengers: two in the front and three in each of the second and third rows. The car can also be configured to seat five or seven passengers, depending on need. The headroom is also very generous.
The cabin is also equipped with decorative touches, including silver and black colors, or wood trim, with gray or beige upholstery made of synthetic or natural leather. The car also has many interior luxuries, but there are complaints about poor interior sealing and some cramped seating in the rear seat.
Since the car has been discontinued in Egypt, its spare parts are scarce, and the Bavarian Auto dealership still provides spare parts for the car, which it still owns the dealership for, even if it does not offer them in Egypt. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain spare parts for the car outside the dealership at the present time. The prices are considered reasonable for this category of cars, and the prices of its spare parts cannot be compared to the prices of other similar four-wheel drive or two-wheel drive cars, as they are less expensive.
The car has a strong suspension to handle heavy duty work. The car has a good chassis and suspension that is smooth to drive and can be used on unpaved roads. The car is stable at speeds and does not feel bumps.
The new Mahindra Scorpio V-Series comes with an advanced independent suspension system, which relies on ABS as standard in both models. It also has a ground clearance of 120 mm, making it easy to handle on rough roads.
The Mahindra Scorpio V Series, introduced in 2010, received numerous exterior modifications, making it more dynamic and elegant. The front end of the car was redesigned to be more beautiful and streamlined, with transparent headlights that provide clear visibility. The front bumper also boasts a distinctive sporty look, with integrated circular fog lights. The air intake on the hood is attractively integrated, but many have confirmed that the car's fit and finish are poor.
Although the car isn't particularly bad overall, its resale price and the resale value of the car itself are not good in the used car market in Egypt. Owners are at risk of losing money, especially since some versions are diesel-powered, a fuel that many Egyptians do not prefer. Taxes are also high due to the car's large engine size, and many are not impressed by the car's appearance and design, or that it is an Indian car, preferring other, more popular cars in this category.
