The BMW i8 Roadster made its debut in December 2017 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, featuring updates and changes to the central hood ventilation grille and slight differences to the side mirrors compared to the coupe version. It was also available in a variety of colors and tire options. Based on the design of the legendary BMW M1, the i8 features butterfly-winged doors and patented glass, which is lightweight and highly rigid. The Bavarian Group, the former BMW agent in Egypt, unveiled its new i8 Roadster locally in 2019, with a single model priced at EGP 2,990,000 at the time of its launch. The only difference between the coupe and convertible is the removable roof on the i8 Roadster, as well as the Roadster badges on the side of the car. The car comes with an electrically retractable roof that can be opened or closed in just 16 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h. It weighs 60 kg more than the coupe. The i8 Roadster comes with a two-year, unlimited-mileage warranty. This warranty has therefore expired on most available versions of the car, while the battery warranty continues to extend to 8 years or 100,000 km.

The i8 Roadster is offered with two engines, one petrol and one electric. The petrol engine has a displacement of 1.5 litres, 3 cylinders, and a 105 kW electric motor. Together, they generate 374 hp and a maximum torque of 320 Nm for the petrol engine and 250 Nm for the electric motor. Together, they produce a torque of 570 Nm. The petrol engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The i8 Roadster accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, slower than the coupe's 4.4 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, while consuming just 2.5 litres of fuel per 100 km.

It comes with a 33 AH battery, enabling the i8 Roadster to travel 43 kilometres on electric power alone. It can be recharged in 2.4 hours, and the fuel tank has a capacity of 42 litres. The car can be driven solely on electric power at a top speed of 120 km/h. This battery can be fully charged in less than 3 hours using car chargers and in less than 5 hours using a conventional home electrical outlet.

The car is available in a single trim level, and its interior is designed with a sporty design that matches the revolutionary exterior design at the time of its launch. It maintains the same level of revolutionism offered by the exterior, as if it were a future version of the company's future car interiors. The lines are distinctive, with a more modern and innovative feel, especially the center console, gearshift lever, and iDrive control indicator.

It also features heated, multi-way electrically adjustable sports seats, an electrically adjustable steering wheel, and lumbar support. The interior is also finished in carbon fiber, along with a ceramic shift lever and ultra-strong, scratch-resistant black zirconium oxide. The car is also equipped with an intelligent infotainment system that can be controlled via an 8.8-inch touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay, but it is not equipped with Android Auto support. The sports steering wheel features paddle shifters and a sporty three-spoke design. Behind it is a large instrument cluster display with numerous designs and modes suitable for all driving modes, whether electric, economical, or even sporty, which gives you the full power of the hybrid system.

It also has an 88-liter luggage compartment, which is very small due to the engine being located in the rear. Space is good in the single front row, as it is a youthful sports car and does not require rear passengers or a large rear storage space.

BMW i8 Convertible spare parts are not widely available in Egypt due to the car's lack of widespread popularity, which also limited the import of spare parts for it, and at the same time, high prices, which is proportional to the car being the most expensive BMW car ever at the time of its introduction. Since it is a hybrid car that is different from other BMW cars, it is difficult to find alternatives for it from other models, and its spare parts are limited to some importers of spare parts and BMW specialists, with difficulty in maintaining it due to its lack of widespread popularity.

The company's designers also succeeded in creating an engineering structure, as the car's base is made of a mixture characterized by both rigidity and lightness, in a proportional manner that works to distribute the weight at a ratio of 50:50, providing the car with stability while driving. This is also enhanced by the low center of gravity, which works to maintain grip when taking turns quickly. However, the car is close to the ground and is not elevated, and therefore faces problems in handling on Egyptian roads, especially in light of the high bumps.
